These databases are the result of long-term monitoring begun in the late 1970s and early 1980s in the North Inlet Estuary, Georgetown County, South Carolina.  The National Science Foundation funded the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program in the North Inlet Estuary from 1981 to June, 1993.  Each core database and its variables are listed below.

Water Chemistry & Quality Data Meteorological/Rain Data Microbial ATP Data Biological Data

Water Chemistry and Quality Data
(also see Meteorological with water parameters (LTERMET) 6/1982-2/1996))

Water Chemistry (LTERDWS) 1978-6/1993
(Daily surface water collected at 10:00 am)
  • nitrogen (total whole, total filtered, particulate, ammonia, nitrate-nitrite)
  • phosphorus (total whole, total filtered, particulate, orthophosphate)
  • organic carbon (total, dissolved, particulate)
  • total suspended sediment
  • inorganic suspended sediment
  • organic suspended sediment
  • chlorophyll a, phaeophytin
Water quality parameters measured at the same time the water sample was taken.
  • salinity
  • tide elevation
  • water temperature
  • secchi
    Ancillary data & images
  • Sediment (water) color

Meteorological/Rain Data

Meteorological with water parameters (LTERMET) 6/1982-4/1996
(Hourly average weather measurements with daily and yearly summaries)
  • air temperature
  • wind direction and speed
  • maximum hourly wind speed
  • barometric pressure
  • solar radiation (Licor sensor: in microEinsteins/m2/s)
  • solar radiation (Eppley sensor in Langleys/minute measuring 280-2800 nm wavelengths)
Water quality parameters measured at the same time:
  • water temperature
  • water conductivity
  • water level
Rain (RAINDAZE): 12 April 1978 - 31 December 2001
  • Rain by event (start day/time & end day/time) in inches and millimeters
  • Total monthly rain by year in inches and millimeters (summary data)
  • Total annual rain by year in inches and millimeters (summary data)
National Weather Service Data (NWS) 12/1986-3/1996
  • daily minimum and maximum air temperature
  • 10:00am instantaneous air temperature
  • daily minimum and maximum barometric pressure
  • daily minimum and maximum relative humidity
  • total daily precipitation

Microbial Population Studies: ATP & bacteria

5 Year Microbial Population Study as measured by ATP (1981-1985)
  • Daily (10:00am) measurements of ATP (nanograms per milliliter) at three estuarine sites.
