Spring '03 Meeting:

Our spring meeting was a joint AERS & SEERS event held March 20-23 in Atlantic Beach, NC at the Royal Pavillion Hotel. Approximately 85 members attended. The meeting included an excellent Thursday evening welcome reception at the NC Pine Knolls Shores Aquarium. Technical sessions were held Friday followed by a happy hour and banquet at the hotel, and technical sessions Saturday morning. SEERS members presented 17 posters and 11 platform presentations. Thanks to all the AERS and SEERS people who helped make this meeting a great one! Special thanks to the Spring meeting sponsors: The Reilly Group and Turner Designs.


SEERS Student Awards:

Student Presentation Award Winners:

SEERS students presented 12 posters and 7 platforms at the Spring meeting. The Best Undergraduate Student Poster Presentation award went to Louis Ambrosio (University of Tampa) and the Best Graduate Student Platform Presentation Award went to Amanda Wrona (University of Georgia).

The award winning presentations were titled:

“Settlement Cues Determining the Distribution and Host Preference of Tunicotheres moseri (Rathbun) in Tampa Bay.” Ambrosio, L.J., University of Tampa, Tampa, FL

“Determining Molting Habitat of Blue Crabs (Callinectes sapidus) in a Georgia Estuary: What Do You Mean There’s No Seagrass?” Wrona, A.B. and R.G. Wiegert, Department of Marine Sciences, University of Georgia, Athens, GA

Student Travel Award Winners:

Congratulations to the following students who received SEERS travel awards to attend the Spring 2003 meeting: Gayle Albers (University of Georgia), Louis Ambrosio (University of Tampa), Amy Filipowicz (College of Charleston), Connie Moy (College of Charleston), and Mike Sheppard (Savannah State University).


SEERS People:

Congratulations and Thanks to former SEERS student representative Susan White (University of Georgia) for the successful production of our SEERS t-shirts! The shirts (available in several colors and 2 sleeve lengths) look great and sold like hotcakes at the Spring meeting. The money raised will help support student travel and presentation awards. Be sure to stop by the SEERS booth at the upcoming ERF meeting in Seattle where there will be more SEERS t-shirts for sale.

Elections for the positions of SEERS secretary, treasurer and student representative were held via e-mail prior to the Spring Meeting. Congratulations to our newest SEERS board members:

Upcoming SEERS Elections:

Elections for the positions of SEERS president elect and program chair will be held prior to the Spring 2004 meeting. Nominations for these positions should be sent to the nominating committee chair, Evan Chipouras (evan@ut.edu). Those wishing to nominate candidates for either post should forward the names to the Chair of the Nominating Committee, Evan Chipouras (evan@ut.edu). Before forwarding your suggestions to Evan, please contact your nominee(s) and ensure that they have interest in and are willing to serve in the position for which they are being nominated.
 

The SEERS Spring 2004 Meeting:

The SEERS spring meeting will be held April 15-17th at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution in Florida. Harbor Branch is centrally located between the cities of Fort Pierce and Vero Beach. Contributed poster sessions are planned for Thursday evening. Contributed oral
presentations will be the full day of Friday, April 16th, and a half-day on Saturday, April
17th. A field trip into the beautiful seagrass beds of the Indian River Lagoon and a tour of Harbor Branch are also being planned.
